21st century Designers

Our 21st century students need to know how to work in teams, cooperate and collaborate to make decisions and use higher-order thinking skills to solve problems. This term, the students of 3/4E created Bee-bot board games for their buddies in KD that would teach Kindergarten students to program robots, make safe decisions, learn to spell, read and even do some mathematics.

Each student created their Bee-bot board games as a draft then a prototype to test their accuracy. They gave each other feedback about these games, testing them with bee-bots to make sure that their instructions were clear, that the board game was enjoyable and that the Kindergarten children would understand how to play the game.

Some of the games were 1 player, some 2 or more player games. They were modeled from games such as Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, Treasure Island, alphabet games and other dice and number games.

Throughout the whole design process, 3/4E students tested, modified and reviewed their work until they finally presented their games to their buddies as a gift.

Bee-bot buddies work together to build a palace

During our bee-bot project, the students from 3/4E worked together with the students from KD to build homes for our bee=bots. We even built a palace! We called it Beebotingham Palace. The kindergarten students became more confident to construct, write, perform, draw and create all sorts of work samples as part of the COGS unit ‘Our Place’. They learnt about safe and unsafe places, made decisions about playing safely at school, road safety and home safety.
